Eolia Mansion Wedding Photography: A Stunning Summer Celebration at Harkness State Park

This breathtaking wedding at the Eolia Mansion at Harkness State Park in Waterford, Connecticut was a truly special event for our team. While the venue is a bit outside of our typical Tri-State area service zone, we were thrilled to make the trip—especially since we have talented team members based in Westchester who were excited to take part. Having photographed a wedding at this venue once before, I knew how visually spectacular it was and jumped at the opportunity to return. The results did not disappoint!

The weather was absolutely perfect—a dream for any outdoor ceremony—and the estate’s lush gardens and oceanfront views created the ideal setting for both romantic portraits and vibrant celebration shots. Our favorite photos from the day were those captured during golden hour, where the warm light washed over the couple in the garden, creating cinematic and timeless images that truly reflect the magic of the day.

Getting Ready at the Inn at Ocean Avenue

The day began with the bride and groom preparing at the charming Inn at Ocean Avenue in New London, CT. We always recommend wrapping up hair and makeup by the time we arrive, so we can capture those beautiful “finishing touch” moments. The bride’s suite was kept neat and styled, with the dress hanging on a beautiful hanger, and Melissa made sure all the layflats were ready with bouquet, rings, and invitations carefully arranged.

We captured the bride’s special first look with her father just before heading to the venue. Meanwhile, our second photographer worked with the groom, documenting detail shots and a touching first look moment with his mom. These quiet moments always help to round out the story of the day.

First Look and Portraits at Eolia Mansion

The first look between the couple took place at the elegant pergola outside the ceremony site. With the mansion as a backdrop and gardens in full bloom, this location provided a perfect canvas for portraits. Following the first look, we captured stunning shots of the bridal party and immediate family on the estate grounds. Emily and Michael chose to read each other private vows. A moment that we love to capture from a distance, allowing the couple to be in the moment but also have photographic memories of the moment!

Ceremony at Harkness State Park

The ceremony itself was held at the pergola, with the sun beginning to dip and a soft breeze rolling in from the nearby shoreline. It was intimate and elegant, framed by lush florals and the stately architecture of the mansion.  We were able to get a little peek of water in the background, and the beautifully manicured garden was so serene and elegant, perfect for Emily and Michael’s wedding ceremony photos. After the ceremony, the couple signed the Ketubah before heading to cocktail hour.

Cocktail Hour and Reception Details

Cocktail hour was hosted in the beautifully manicured garden spaces of the mansion. Instead of pre-planned group shots, the couple preferred a more candid approach—grabbing the photographers for spontaneous photos throughout the evening. Meanwhile, our second shooter focused on ambiance, guest interactions, and the artful presentation of food and decor.

Reception formalities began with the couple’s first dance, followed by heartfelt toasts and parent dances. Sunset hit just before dinner, and we took the opportunity to step outside for golden-hour portraits. These images became instant favorites—romantic, glowing, and full of emotion.

Dinner was served outdoors on the estate lawn, followed by dancing under the stars. The couple opted out of formal table photos, so our team made sure to move through the crowd offering posed shots and candid moments to ensure everyone was captured.
